The Upstream Training Trust (UTT) is a non-profit initiative managed by the Petroleum Agency SA, with a clear mission: to promote and supply specialized human talent for South Africa’s oil and gas industry. The trust focuses on investing in the development of human capital, particularly prioritizing students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.
For the 2025 academic year, UTT is inviting eligible students to apply for its bursary program, designed to support learners pursuing careers in the oil and gas sector.
Eligible Fields of Study
The bursary targets research and academic development in the following STEM-related disciplines:
- Chemical Engineering
- Chemistry
- Computer Science
- Electrical Engineering
- Geophysics
- Geoscience
- Industrial Engineering
- Information Systems
- Information Technology
- Mathematics
- Mechatronics
- Mining Engineering
- Physical Science
Financial Support Offered
UTT bursaries are comprehensive and cover several key expenses:
- Tuition fees
- Books and study materials
- Housing/accommodation
- Meals
The total value of the bursary is R120,000.
Additionally, academic performance incentives are offered to motivate excellence:
- 65–69%: R5,000
- 70–74%: R10,000
- 75% and above: R15,000
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- South African citizenship
- Matriculated or currently completing Matric
- Planning to pursue or already pursuing a relevant STEM degree in 2026
- Enrolled or conditionally accepted at a South African higher education institution
- Minimum overall passing score of 60%
- At least 65% in English, Mathematics, and Science
- Passing grades in all current subjects (if enrolled)
- Not receiving another bursary or financial aid
Preference is given to:
- Students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds
- Female students
- Individuals passionate about a career in the upstream oil and gas industry

The UTT Bursary Application 2025 can be accessed online. Applicants should:
- Download and complete the application form in PDF format.
- Submit a hard copy of the form and required documents to: Upstream Training Trust

Required supporting documents include:
- ID document
- Grade 11 final results and latest Matric results
- Matric certificate (if completed)
- Full academic record (if currently studying)
- Proof of application to or acceptance at a higher education institution
- Quotation for tuition and accommodation
- Motivational letter
- Parents’ ID copies (certified)
- Proof of household income
Failure to submit any of these may result in disqualification.

All applications must be submitted by 30 September 2025.
