About the Programme
Phlebotomy Technicians play a vital role in healthcare, specialising in drawing blood and collecting other specimens from patients or donors. This learnership equips learners with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on training, ensuring they are fully prepared for professional practice.
The programme runs over 24 months, during which learners will be required to complete practical training, attend lectures, and meet academic requirements. On successful completion, candidates will sit for the HPCSA (Health Professions Council of South Africa) board examination. Passing this exam allows graduates to register as qualified Phlebotomy Technicians, opening the door to employment in pathology laboratories, hospitals, and blood donation services.
Minimum Entry Requirements
Applicants must meet the following educational and skill criteria:
- National Senior Certificate (NSC) with:
- English (HL or FAL): Level 4 (50%–59%)
- Life Sciences: Level 4 (50%–59%)
- Mathematics: Level 3 (40%–49%) OR Mathematical Literacy: Level 4 (50%–59%)
- Experience: 0–1 year of relevant exposure (advantageous but not essential)
- Skills: Basic computer literacy and knowledge of phlebotomy procedures
Key Responsibilities During the Learnership
Learners accepted into the programme will:
- Participate in structured classroom and practical training
- Complete assignments and formal assessments
- Write the HPCSA board examination
- Perform specimen collection, including venous and capillary blood draws
- Adhere to strict safety and hygiene standards
- Apply customer care principles in service delivery
