The Harvard Global Health Institute (HGHI) is inviting applications for its 2025–2026 Visiting Research Scholarship Program, offering an exciting opportunity for international researchers to collaborate with Harvard faculty for a six-week residency in Boston, Massachusetts. The program is designed to foster academic partnerships, promote knowledge exchange, and advance global health research.

Program Details

Harvard faculty may apply to host international collaborators, providing them with full financial support during their six-week stay. Visiting scholars will engage in joint research projects, participate in HGHI events and symposia, and gain access to Harvard’s vibrant academic community.

The fellowship covers essential costs, including travel, housing, health insurance, J-1 visa fees, and a daily stipend for meals and other logistical expenses. Faculty sponsors serve as primary collaborators and mentors, guiding the visiting scholar throughout the residency.

Eligibility Criteria

For Harvard Faculty Sponsors:

  • Must hold a faculty appointment at any Harvard school or affiliated hospital.
  • Must demonstrate a history of meaningful collaboration with the visiting scholar.
  • Must secure departmental approval to provide a non-faculty academic appointment (HUID) and sponsor a J-1 visa.
  • Must submit a detailed work plan and commit to regular meetings with the visiting scholar.

For Visiting Scholars:

  • Must hold a doctoral degree (or, in exceptional cases, a master’s degree) in a relevant field.
  • Must demonstrate evidence of prior collaborative work with the Harvard sponsor.
  • Must be in good standing at their home institution and hold an active passport.
  • Must meet U.S. visa requirements, including English language proficiency.
  • Must reside in Boston for the duration of the six-week program.

Application Process

Applications must be submitted by a Harvard faculty sponsor through the upcoming online portal. The deadline is 11:59 PM on October 19, 2025.

Required materials include:

  • Visiting scholar’s name, country of origin, and current position.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) of the visiting scholar.
  • A 1–2 page narrative describing the collaborative project and justification for in-person engagement.
  • Two letters of reference: one from the scholar’s home institution approving a six-week leave, and one from the Harvard sponsor outlining the work plan and the need for on-site collaboration.

Selection Criteria

Applications will be assessed based on:

  • Strength and history of collaboration between the scholar and Harvard mentor.
  • Departmental support and administrative readiness.
  • Professional benefit and potential career impact for the visiting scholar.
  • Alignment with HGHI’s focus areas, including health equity, climate change and health, infectious diseases, digital transformation in health, global health financing, health justice, and community-engaged programming.

Expectations of Scholars

Selected scholars are expected to complete all administrative and visa requirements, attend a virtual orientation, present their research at HGHI events, and participate in the annual HGHI symposium and other relevant activities.
