Holliday Craft Ideas
With just a few days left for wrapping presents, baking cookies, decorating, and however you make merry this season we wanted to share some ideas for creating some cozy additions to your holiday. Using some small bits of leftover yarn and materials from our craft baskets, we’ve made these fun, small pieces that can be used for tree ornaments, gift tags, garland and more!
We’ve used our American Cormo yarn in a handful of festive colors to make the following free patterns:
November Mood by Katrin Schubert – This pattern uses two colors to create soft and squishy brioche stars! The construction can be a big confusing at first, each star is begun by casting on all the exterior stitches and working brioche decreases gradually until you reach the center, however the end result is worth that bit of head-scratching! There are two available sizes which makes for fun customization – also very helpful depending on how much yarn you have to work with! These pieces are great for all manner of holiday décor but it did cross our minds they would make excellent trivets for a holiday table spread!
Christmas Star by Clarie M – These crochet stars are great for beginners to crochet. Once we got a hang of the pattern we could have made a hundred! Because of they’re size they make the perfect gift toppers, fitting daintily on top of each gift. They inspired memories of rustic lace and a homey, country Christmas.
Knit Stars by Kirsten Hipsky – These five-point knit stars had another construction that left us guessing at first, but once the first star was completed we felt very pleased! Instructions are included to walk you through making two stars, seaming them together along the edge and stuffing. We left ours flat so they could be used a few different ways but there may be some puffy, stuffed stars in our future!
Multi-Color Pom Poms by Laura Radniecki – Pom-poms are such a fun and versatile accessory. Because we were using the leftover ends from a year of knitting projects we chose to make these multi-colored and use up the last bits of everything at once! They’re fun to hang on the tree as ornaments just as they are, but like everything else on this list, they also make fantastic garland and gift toppers.
Throw in some braided cords, dried orange slices, and anything else that brings you joy and apply liberally for full holiday coziness!
Our favorite is idea is to finish each piece with a loop for hanging, then slip it under the ribbon of a gift, so the recipient gets a handmade ornament for future decorating. Bonus gift!
Here’s to hoping you have some spare moments this week to just enjoy playing, experimenting, being creative and creating some magic of your own.
